Grape Arbor
A grape arbor is a great structure for training unruly vines and creating shade for an intimate sitting area. Homeowners Tony and Jennifer Lewandowski had a small, sunny side yard with a 14- by 14-foot flagstone patio and two mature grape vines (figure A). They wanted an arbor to support the vines.

Garden Arbor Design
The garden arbor design in this project calls for a 2-post arbor; but you can apply the same principles to a larger wooden arbor (a 4-post arbor will be more likely to remain plumb as the years pass). It will take the average do-it-yourself landscaper 2 days to build this garden arbor.

Color Shade Arbor
A charming arbor-- from planning the design and proportions to completing the upper section of the structure. (The design requires the base to be constructed from heavier materials, while the top portion is assembled with lighter pieces.) On a scale of difficulty from 1 to 5 (1 being the easiest), Lazar rates this project a 1.

Gourd Arbor
Amy Skyrus wants to add a gourd arbor that will create an attractive entryway into the area. Along the sides of the arbor--which will eventually be covered by gourd vines--the crew will add a wrought-iron fence to further define the area without blocking the view of the vegetable beds. Around the fence Chambliss-Mazzera will fill in the landscape with showy, colorful plants.

Garden Arbor Bench
You can add a little romance to your garden with this handsome arbor bench. The freestanding 60-inch-wide, 30-inch-deep, 86-inch-high structure has a number of subtle features that add to its appearance, strength, and comfort.
